Ask an expert

Short answer: Temple Restoration Paints factory-color spray paint is a 16 oz 1K single-stage, high-gloss automotive enamel in an aerosol can, mixed to original Volkswagen L-code colors. This listing covers the 56 blue colors in the Temple range. Pick your paint code from the Color menu. $70.00 per can.

Mixed to order: Popular colors usually ship right away. Less common colors that we don't have on the shelf are mixed fresh for your order, so please allow a 2–4 business day lead time before they ship.

Original VW colors, ready to spray

Temple Restoration Paints mixes each can to a specific factory Volkswagen color, listed by its L-code and factory name, the same code stamped on your car's M-plate or paint tag. It is made for air-cooled restorers: touching up a door jamb, painting a replacement panel, refinishing small parts, or blending a repair into original paint.

The paint is a 1K single-stage enamel, so the gloss and the color are in one product with no separate clear coat. It is UV protected to resist fading, and once cured it can be wet sanded and buffed to match the gloss and texture of the paint around it.

Most popular blues: L31 Dove Blue (New), L31 Dove Blue (Patina), L360 Sea Blue, L380 Turquoise, L519 Bahama Blue.

How to use it

  1. Clean and degrease the surface, then sand and prime bare metal or repairs with a compatible automotive primer.
  2. Shake the can well. Spray a test card first and check the color against your car in daylight.
  3. Apply several light, even coats rather than one heavy coat, allowing flash time between coats per the can label.
  4. Let the paint cure fully, then wet sand and buff to blend the gloss into the surrounding finish.

Always follow the directions and safety information printed on the can.

FAQ

How do I find my VW's paint code?
Most air-cooled VWs carry the factory L-code on the M-plate or paint plate (under the front hood, behind the spare tire, or on the body tag), and later models on the data sticker in the trunk or service booklet. Pick the matching L-code from the Color menu.

What kind of paint is Temple Restoration Paints spray paint?
A 16 oz 1K single-stage, high-gloss automotive enamel in an aerosol can. It is UV protected, and no separate clear coat is needed.

Will it match my existing paint?
Each can is mixed to the factory VW color for that code. Once cured it can be wet sanded and buffed to blend into existing paint. Old paint fades, so spray a test card and compare in daylight before you paint the panel.

Can I wet sand and buff it?
Yes. Once fully cured, the finish can be wet sanded and machine or hand buffed like any single-stage enamel.

Why are there New and Patina versions of some colors?
L31 Dove Blue and L53 Sealing Wax Red are offered as a fresh factory shade (New) and an aged, sun-faded shade (Patina) for touching up original-paint cars.

How long does it take to ship?
Popular colors usually ship right away. Less common colors we don't have in stock are mixed fresh when you order, so allow a 2–4 business day lead time before they ship.

Is the price per can?
Yes, $70.00 for one aerosol can. Order as many cans as the job needs.

Can spray paint ship by air or overseas?
No. Aerosols are regulated as hazardous for shipping, so these cans ship by ground only and cannot ship to AK, HI, PR, GU, AS, MP, UM or VI, or outside the US.
