Everything for a points tune-up on a 1970–73 VW, in one box
A proper air-cooled tune-up is valves, points, plugs and an oil change, and every one of those needs a part you don't want to discover you're missing on Saturday morning. It's the parts list our VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup gives for these engines, in one box for 5% less than buying the parts one at a time. Add oil for your climate and you have the whole job.

Fitment
- VW Beetle and Super Beetle, 1970–1973
- VW Karmann Ghia, 1970–1973
- VW Bus with a Type 1 engine, 1971
- VW Thing, 1973
Not for: engines converted to a Bosch 009 (see our 009 tune-up kit), electronic ignition (see the electronic-ignition service kit), or 1972-and-later Bus Type 4 engines.
How to do the job
- Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm), or to the figure on your fan-shroud decal, and fit the new cork gaskets.
- Fit the points and condenser, gap the points to 0.016", and check dwell.
- Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
- Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
- Warm it up and set the timing. On the original two-hose distributor, that's 5° after TDC at 800–950 rpm with both hoses connected.
Every number for your exact engine code and distributor is in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup.
Questions we get
My engine has a 009 distributor. Then the points and condenser in this kit won't fit. Use the 009 tune-up kit.
Do I need a distributor cap and wires? Only if yours are cracked, carbon-tracked or old. They're listed separately in the spec lookup.
Is oil included? No. Pick the grade for your climate; you need three quarts of our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil.
