Dansk Heavy-Duty Heater Boxes | VW Type 1 & Type 2 Upright Engines (95-3012-B / 95-3013-B)
If your Beetle or Bus smells like exhaust with the heat on, or the heat levers do nothing at all, the heater boxes are the usual suspect. After fifty years the inner exhaust pipes rust through, the outer shells rot at the ends, and the flap levers seize. The Dansk Heavy-Duty heater box is a European-made stock replacement for the 1300–1600cc upright engine. It restores factory cabin heat and defrost and keeps exhaust out of the car, and it bolts to the stock exhaust.
Order the left or right box on its own if only one side is gone, or the pair to do both at once — which is usually the right call, since the second side is rarely far behind.
Vehicle Fitment
For Type 1 and Type 2 upright engines (the fan-shroud-on-top engine), 1200/1300/1500/1600cc:
- VW Beetle: 1963–1979
- VW Super Beetle: 1971–1980
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1963–1974
- VW Thing (181): 1973–1974
- VW Bus / Transporter: 1963–1974 with the upright 1200–1600 engine
Does not fit: the 1700–2000 Type 4 “pancake” engine in 1972–79 Buses, the 1975–79 fuel-injected Beetle, or header/performance exhaust systems. Those take different heater boxes — see our heater box collection.

Installation Notes
- Use new exhaust port gaskets and new heater box to muffler gaskets, and soak old studs and nuts in penetrating oil first.
- Reconnect the heater cables and check the flaps open fully and close fully before you refit the tin.
- Check the flexible hoses from the boxes to the heater channels while you're in there; torn hoses cost you most of your heat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the left, the right, or both?
If only one side is rusted through you can replace just that side. Most people replace both, because the other side is usually in the same condition.
Will these fit my 1974 Bus?
Only if it has the upright 1600 engine. The 1700, 1800 and 2.0 Type 4 engines use different heat exchangers.
Will they work with a header or performance exhaust?
No. These are for the stock exhaust. For a header system, use a high-performance 1-1/2" heater box made for your header.
Why is the right box priced higher than the left?
That reflects the manufacturer's list pricing for each side.
Do they come painted?
They ship in a black shipping paint, which is meant to protect them in transit rather than on the car.
