The stock VW heater box runs the exhaust through a 29mm tube — fine for a 40hp engine, a real restriction for a built one. Most people with a big-bore engine and a header give up cabin heat entirely. The Dansk High-Performance heater box is the middle ground. It keeps a heater box on the car, but opens the exhaust tube up to 38mm (1-1/2") outside diameter so it can feed a matching performance header instead of choking it.
Be realistic about the trade: the larger tube with no aluminum fins inside means less heat than a stock box. You still get defrost and some cabin heat — which on a street car in winter is a lot better than none.
Header Compatibility — Read Before Ordering
Dansk makes these as a custom-fit application for specific headers: EMPI P/N 3255, 3256, 7320 and 55-7320 only. They are not a bolt-on for a stock exhaust or for other headers. If you are running a different header, contact us before ordering.
Vehicle Fitment
For Type 1 and Type 2 upright engines running one of the headers above:
- VW Beetle: 1963–1974
- VW Super Beetle: 1971–1980
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1963–1974
- VW Thing (181): 1973–1974
- VW Bus / Transporter: with the upright Type 1 engine
Not for the 1700–2000 Type 4 engine.

Will I still have heat?
Yes, but less than with stock heater boxes. The larger tube with no aluminum inside trades heat for exhaust flow.
Will these fit my stock exhaust?
No. They are made to fit specific performance headers: EMPI 3255, 3256, 7320 and 55-7320.
What tube size are they?
38mm outside, 35mm inside, which is 1-1/2 inch. The stock tube is 29mm.
Do they fit a Type 4 Bus engine?
No, only Type 1 and Type 2 upright engines.
