EMPI 12" Braided Copper Ground Strap — Chassis, Battery & Transmission Ground (00-9468-0)

A frayed, corroded or undersized ground strap is behind more "bad starter" and "bad battery" diagnoses than any other single part on an air-cooled VW. This is EMPI's stock-style 12-inch braided copper ground strap, the middle length in EMPI's three-length family, sized for the short battery-to-body and transmission-to-chassis runs where a 14" strap is too long to route cleanly. EMPI part #00-9468-0.

Why the Ground Side Matters

Your starter pulls somewhere between 150 and 300+ amps while cranking, and every one of those amps has to come back through the ground path. Current only flows as well as the worst connection in that loop, so a strap with green powder under the terminal or broken strands inside the braid quietly starves the starter. The symptoms look like other failures: slow lazy cranking, a solenoid that clicks but won't spin, dash lights that dim when you turn the key, and starting that gets worse every cold morning. Replacing the strap is a ten-minute job that often ends a month of parts-swapping.

Why Braided Instead of Solid Cable

An air-cooled engine and transaxle sit on rubber mounts and move constantly relative to the body. Flat braided strap absorbs that movement; a solid cable work-hardens at the terminal and eventually cracks strands inside the insulation where you cannot see it. Braid also gives you far more surface area for the same bulk, so it carries cranking current with less voltage drop and stays flexible enough to route around a pulley or heater channel without kinking.

Where the 12" Length Is Used

  • Battery to body: the short run from the battery negative post to a chassis bolt under the rear seat on most Beetles
  • Transmission or engine to chassis: the factory ground that gets soaked in oil and road salt and is almost always the weak link on a car with electrical gremlins
  • Buggy, Baja and sand rail builds: short, clean grounds between a relocated battery, the frame and the engine case
  • Any 6V or 12V restoration needing a high-current ground jumper roughly a foot long

Note on length: EMPI builds this strap in 9", 12" and 14". Measure your existing strap or the bolt-to-bolt distance before ordering — a ground strap should be long enough to take the mounts' movement without being pulled taut, and short enough that it cannot chafe on a pulley or exhaust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which length do I need, 9", 12" or 14"?
Measure bolt to bolt and add about an inch of slack. 14" is the common Beetle battery-to-body length; 12" suits shorter battery grounds and most transmission-to-chassis runs; 9" is for tight relocated-battery and buggy installs.

Will this work on a 6-volt car?
Yes. Cable sizing depends on current and length, not voltage. A 6V starter actually draws more amps than a 12V one for the same work, so a healthy ground matters even more on an early car.

Can I use it as the engine or transmission ground?
Yes, that is one of its most common uses. The factory trans-to-chassis strap is usually the most neglected ground on the car and is the first thing to replace when you are chasing a no-crank.

Do I need to clean the mounting points?
Always. A new strap bolted to a rusty bracket fixes nothing. Take both contact points back to bright metal, torque the bolt properly, then seal the outside of the joint with a light film of dielectric grease so it does not corrode again.

How do I know my old strap is bad if it looks fine?
Measure voltage drop while cranking: put your meter across the strap, from one bolt to the other, and crank. More than about 0.2 volts across a ground strap means it is adding resistance and should be replaced, even if the braid looks clean.

Does this include mounting hardware?
No. The strap is sold each and reuses your existing chassis bolt or battery clamp hardware.
