EMPI 40mm HPMX Dual Carburetor Kit — Chrome Air Cleaners, Hex Bar Linkage (47-7317-0)

A single stock carburetor is the biggest thing holding back a healthy dual-port Type 1 engine: long intake runners, uneven mixture between the cylinders, and a flat spot everywhere past the middle of the rev range. EMPI 47-7317-0 puts a 40mm HPMX carburetor on each head, with short manifolds, a hex bar linkage and chrome air cleaners. It is the complete box for converting a dual-port Beetle, Super Beetle, Ghia, Thing or Type 1-engine Bus to dual carbs.

Fitment

This kit fits air-cooled VW upright Type 1 engines with dual-port cylinder heads.

• CONFIRMED (EMPI, dual-port heads required): VW Beetle 1950–1979, Super Beetle 1971–1980, Karmann Ghia 1970–1974, Thing 1973–1974, and Type 2 Bus and Pickup 1968–1974 with the 1.6L Type 1 engine.
• NOT CONFIRMED: single-port engines (they need dual-port heads first), 1975-on fuel-injected Beetles unless converted to carburetors, dune buggies and sand rails (not in EMPI's list, although they use the same engine), and cars with a stock fan shroud that the manifold offset does not clear.
• DOES NOT FIT: Type 3 pancake engines, Type 4 engines (1972–1979 Bus 1.7–2.0L, 914) and Porsche engines.

Installation Notes

• Read the job first: EMPI's Type 1 dual HPMX/IDF instruction sheet assumes a stock, healthy engine. The fuel and ignition come off first, then the old manifold, and the carbs and linkage are bench-assembled before they go on.
• Torque limits (EMPI sheet 99-4098-0): case nut/bolt 15 ft-lbs; throttle shaft nuts 4–5 ft-lbs maximum; carburetor hold-down nuts 12–14 ft-lbs maximum.
• Fuel pressure: HPMX carbs want low, regulated fuel pressure. Fit a regulator if you run an electric pump.
• Before the first start: check that the linkage moves freely through full travel and that plug wires are clear. Then synchronize the carbs with a Syncrometer and set idle mixture with a tachometer.
• Jetting: plan on a jetting check for your displacement, cam, ignition and altitude. EMPI's baseline for 40 and 44 HPMX is a 130 main, 160 air corrector, 55 idle and F7 emulsion tube (sheet 99-4125-0).

Frequently Asked Questions

• Does this fit a 1971 VW Super Beetle? Yes, if the engine has dual-port heads, which every US Super Beetle had from the factory. EMPI lists 1971–1980 Super Beetles with dual-port heads.
• Will it fit my single-port engine? No. The manifolds are for dual-port Type 1 heads. A single-port engine needs dual-port heads first.
• Will it clear my stock fan shroud? Not always. Dealers note that the manifold offset may need an aftermarket or 36hp-style fan shroud, or shroud modification. Check before you commit.
• Does it fit a Type 3 or a Type 4 Bus? No. It is for the upright Type 1 engine only. Type 3 pancake engines and the 1.7-2.0L Type 4 engine need different kits.
• 40mm or 44mm? The 40mm HPMX suits most street engines from a stock 1600 up to mild big-bore builds. The 44mm (EMPI 47-7319-0) is for larger, higher-revving engines.
• Is it jetted out of the box? It ships jetted as a matched, test-run pair, but EMPI says no single jet set covers every engine, so plan on a jetting check. EMPI's tuning sheet 99-4125-0 gives the baseline.
• What is not included? Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, distributor, throttle cable and extra jets are not included.
