Most Weber 32/36 DGV conversions on air-cooled VWs end up with a filter that is either too tall to clear the engine lid or too cheap to seal on the carb top. EMPI 00-8806-0 is a low-profile, 1-3/4 in tall chrome rectangular air cleaner with a washable gauze element, sized for the Weber DGV, DGAV and DGEV. It seals on the carb top, clears the tin and the lid, and gives the carb clean air to meter.

Installation Notes

• Check the carb top gasket surface before you fit it. An old warped gasket lets unfiltered air in, and grit wears the throttle shafts.
• Snug the mounting hardware evenly and don't crush the base plate. Chrome steel dents if you overtighten it.
• Check engine-lid clearance with the lid closed. On some Bus and Bay tin setups the choke wiring or fuel line has to be rerouted.
• Carb jetting may need a re-check after you change from a restrictive filter to gauze.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Will this fit the Weber 32/36 DGV on my 1972 Beetle? Yes. It bolts to the Weber DGV, DGAV and DGEV progressive carburetor top, which is how most air-cooled Type 1 progressive conversions are set up.
• Does it fit a Weber DFV or DFEV? No. The DFV/DFAV/DFEV top is different. EMPI makes a separate air cleaner for those carbs (00-8809-0).
• Does it fit my stock Solex/Brosol PICT carburetor? No. Stock 28/30/34 PICT carbs use a round air cleaner (for example EMPI 17-2823-0).
• Why a 1-3/4 inch tall filter? The low height clears engine lids, fuel lines and alternator stands. That is the usual reason a stock-style oil-bath cleaner won't fit a DGV conversion.
• Is the gauze element washable? Yes. Wash it in warm soapy water, let it dry completely, and refit it. Don't run it wet or oil-soaked.
