Forty-plus years of heat cycles turn original VW wiring into a fire risk. This is EMPI's complete reproduction wiring harness for the 1962–1964 Beetle sedan — an all-new loom built to the factory German pattern, with correct gauges, correct colors and factory-style connectors, so you can pull the old wiring out in one piece and rewire the car properly. Not for convertibles. EMPI lists this harness as a sedan part. Cabriolet bodies of these years route the rear section differently. EMPI's 1965 and later harnesses (98-9484-0, 98-9485-0, 98-9486-0) cover sedan and convertible together.

Technical Specifications

Before You Start

• Photograph the old harness in place before removing it, especially behind the dash and at the light housings
• Pull the old loom out as one piece and lay it next to the new one to confirm branch routing
• Disconnect the battery ground first, and leave it disconnected until the last connection is made
• Clean every ground point back to bright metal — a new harness will not fix a rusty ground bracket
• Budget a weekend. It is not difficult work, but it is slow, patient work with the seats and dash trim out

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my 1965 Beetle?
No. VW changed the harness in 1965. Use EMPI 98-9484-0 for 1965, 98-9485-0 for 1966 and 98-9486-0 for 1967.

Is this for 6-volt or 12-volt cars?
Both. 1962–1964 Beetles left the factory 6-volt, and the same harness serves the car after a 12-volt conversion. Voltage does not change the routing, and the wire gauges are sized for the higher current of the 6-volt system.

Does it come with a fuse box?
No. The fuse box, switches and battery cables are sold separately.

Are the wires labeled?
Yes. Branch wires are individually packaged and numbered, and the colors and tracer stripes follow the factory German scheme so they match a period wiring diagram.

Will it work on a right-hand-drive car?
No. This is a left-hand-drive harness.

Can I use it on a convertible?
EMPI lists it as a sedan harness. For a 1962–1964 cabriolet, check the rear section routing against your car before ordering, or use a convertible-specific loom.

Do I need to rewire the whole car at once?
It is far easier than doing it in pieces. Because the harness is one assembly, splitting the job means running the new loom alongside the old one, which usually takes longer than doing it properly in one go.
