An original German doghouse shroud that hasn't been crushed, rusted through at the seams, or hacked for a heater delete is getting hard to find, and a cracked shroud with missing flaps is a quick way to cook the number 3 cylinder. EMPI 00-8672-7 is a new black doghouse fan shroud without heater duct outlets, built for the late doghouse oil cooler with internal baffles that direct air across all four cylinders. It is aimed at buggies, Baja Bugs, sand rails and street engines where cabin heat is not wanted.

This shroud fits VW Type 1 upright engines set up with the late doghouse oil cooler. That is the factory setup on 1971–1979 Type 1 engines, and a common conversion on earlier upright engines.

Installation Notes

• Transfer or replace the thermostat flaps and linkage only if your build uses them. Many buggies run without, but a street car should keep them.
• Trial-fit the shroud with the fan, alternator or generator stand and doghouse cooler before final assembly. Some trimming or adjusting is normal for an aftermarket shroud.
• Seal every gap between the shroud and the cylinder tins. Air that escapes through a gap never reaches the fins, so use spacers on wide-cylinder engines where needed.
• Center the fan in the housing and check that it spins freely before you tighten the pulley nut.

• Does this fit a 1974 VW Beetle? Yes. 1971–1979 Type 1 upright engines came from the factory with the doghouse oil cooler this shroud is built around. Because it has no heater outlets, you give up cabin heat unless you add your own ducting.
• Will it fit my 1968 Beetle with the original oil cooler? Not as-is. Pre-1971 engines use the smaller cooler inside the shroud. To run a doghouse shroud you also need a doghouse oil cooler with its adapter, the wider doghouse fan and the matching tin.
• What does 'no heater ducts' mean? There are no outlets on the sides of the shroud for the heater hoses. It is built for buggies, sand rails, Baja Bugs and race engines where the heat exchangers or cabin heat are deleted.
• Which cooling fan do I need? A doghouse-width fan, such as EMPI 98-2004-B (36.9mm). An early narrow fan will not fill the housing correctly.
