What's Included
- One right-hand heat exchanger
Not Included
- Left heat exchanger
- Exhaust gaskets and nuts
- Heater hoses and flap cables
Why It Matters
The heat exchanger is the exhaust pipe and the heater in one part. Fresh air from the fan passes over the hot exhaust pipe and goes into the car. When the inner pipe rusts through, exhaust gas and carbon monoxide can get into the cabin. That is a real safety problem, not just a smell.
Other signs are a rattle from loose fins, a heater that blows cold, or exhaust leaks at the head flange. On a 36hp car, finding a usable original box is now hard, so a new one is often the only good option.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Check that the flap arm and cable linkage match your original before you remove anything.
- Use new copper or steel exhaust gaskets at the head.
- Leave all flanges loose until the muffler and both boxes line up, then tighten.
- Reconnect heater cables and check that the flaps open and close fully.
- Run the engine and check for leaks before refitting tin.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
