JP Group Heater Boxes for the Air-Cooled VW Vanagon, 1980–1983 (JP-8227-0 / JP-8228-0)
The air-cooled Vanagon had only four model years before VW switched to the water-cooled Wasserboxer, and its heat exchangers are hard to find. The originals are forty years old now, and a rusted-through box on a van means no heat and a real risk of exhaust in the cabin. JP Group makes these as an OE-pattern replacement for the 2.0 litre Type 4 engine in the US-market 1980–1983 air-cooled Vanagon.

Installation Notes
- Soak the exhaust studs well ahead of time and have a stud kit ready. Type 4 studs are known for breaking.
- Use new gaskets throughout, and check that the heater flaps and cables move freely before the tin goes back on.

Is my Vanagon air-cooled?
US air-cooled Vanagons were built from 1980 to early 1983. The quick check: water-cooled Vanagons have a radiator behind a second, lower grille at the front, and air-cooled ones don't. If you're unsure, send us your VIN or engine code.
Will these fit a Bay Window Bus?
No. The 1972–1978 Type 4 Bus uses different heat exchangers.
