JP Group Heater Boxes for the 1972–1978 VW Bus, Type 4 Engine (JP-8221-0 / JP-8222-0)
A Bay Window Bus is a big box of cold air, and on the Type 4 engine the heat exchangers are the only real source of cabin heat. When they rust through you lose that heat, and you can end up with exhaust fumes in the cabin. That is dangerous in a van. JP Group makes these as an OE-pattern replacement for the 1700, 1800 and 2.0 Type 4 “pancake” engine in the 1972–1978 Bus.

- VW Bus / Transporter, 1972–1978, Type 4 engine: 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 litre

Installation Notes
- Type 4 exhaust studs are known for breaking. Soak them for days, heat them if you can, and have a stud kit on hand.
- Use new port and muffler gaskets. Check the heater flaps and cables work before the tin goes back on.
- Replace cracked heater hoses and check the fresh-air fan ducting while you're in there.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Bus has a Type 4 engine?
The Type 4 is the flat “pancake” engine with the cooling fan on the front of the crank. It came in 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 litre sizes. The upright Type 1 engine has a tall fan shroud on top.
Will these fit a 1979 Bus?
JP Group lists them for 1972–1978. Contact us with your engine code for a 1979.
