These are JP Group OE-pattern heater boxes (heat exchangers) for the 1972–1978 VW Bus / Transporter with the Type 4 “pancake” engine in 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 litre form. They restore cabin heat and defrost and keep exhaust out of the fresh-air path. Sold as a left (JP-8221-0), a right (JP-8222-0) or a pair.

Why the right heater box matters
A Bay Window Bus is a big box of cold air, and on the Type 4 engine the heat exchangers are the only real source of cabin heat. When they rust through you lose that heat, and you can end up with exhaust fumes in the cabin, which is dangerous in a van. Type 4 boxes are larger and heavier than Type 1 boxes, so the engine type decides which part you need.
Installation notes
- Type 4 exhaust studs are known for breaking. Soak them for days, heat them if you can, and have a stud kit on hand.
- Use new port and muffler gaskets. Check the heater flaps and cables work before the tin goes back on.
- Replace cracked heater hoses and check the fresh-air fan ducting while you're in there.
