What's Included / Not Included
- Included: One right heater control cable.
- Not included: Left heater cable, guide tubes, heater lever or flap hardware.
Why It Matters
Air-cooled Vanagons get their cabin heat from flaps on the heat exchangers, worked by long cables from the dash lever. When a cable rusts in its tube, snaps, or comes loose at the flap, one side stops opening and the van stays cold, or a flap stays open all year. Air-cooled Vanagon parts are only made for three or four model years, so they are getting harder to find than Bus or Wasserboxer parts.
Installation Notes
- Confirm your Vanagon is an air-cooled 2.0 model and that this is the right-side cable.
- Note the routing and the clamp position at the flap lever before removing the old cable.
- Lightly grease the cable and feed it through the existing guide tube.
- With the dash lever closed, clamp the cable so the heat exchanger flap is fully closed.
- Check the flap opens fully when the lever is moved, and that the left side works the same.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual for your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. EMPI lists the 1980–1982 Vanagon 2.0, right side.
Does it fit my 1985 Vanagon?
