Why It Matters
The stock muffler on a Beetle rusts out from the inside, then cracks at the seams and the heater riser. A blown muffler is loud, lets fumes reach the cabin through the heater, and robs power because the engine no longer sees the back-pressure it was tuned for.
A stainless Sebring-style muffler gives the classic twin-outlet look and a deeper note than stock, and stainless steel lasts many times longer than a mild-steel box. This JP Group version is meant to be used with heat exchangers, so you keep a working heater, which matters on a car that is driven in winter.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Soak all exhaust nuts with penetrating oil the night before. Studs in the heads snap easily.
- Fit new gaskets at every joint. Leave all nuts finger tight until the muffler is aligned, then tighten evenly.
- Check clearance to the rear apron and engine tin; lowered cars may need the apron trimmed.
- Run the engine and check for leaks at each flange before refitting tin.
- Stainless steel changes colour with heat. That is normal.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
