Short answer: Temple Restoration Paints spray paint is a 16 oz can of 1K single-stage, high-gloss automotive enamel, mixed to the original Volkswagen color for each L-code. This listing holds the 18 whites and ivories. Pick your code from the Color menu. $70.00 a can.
The two whites most cars wear: L87 Pearl White was VW's main white from 1958 to 1968: the Karmann Ghia from 1958, then the Beetle, Type 3 and Split Bus from 1961. L90D Pastel White took over in 1970 and ran the longest of any white: Beetle and Super Beetle, Bay Bus, Thing and Vanagon through 1991.
Find your code first. Look it up by code, color name or year on our VW paint codes page, or call the shop at (657) 438-7002 and we will check it with you.
Two-tone Bus? Buy the lower color too
On a two-tone Bus the white is only the top half. The lower color is a separate can on its own listing:
- L289 Blue White (Split Bus, 1961–1965): over L380 Turquoise or L360 Sea Blue.
- L680 Cumulus White (Split Bus, 1966–1967): over L360 Sea Blue.
- L87 Pearl White (Split Bus, 1961–1967): over L325 Mouse Grey or L512 Velvet Green. The factory also put L289 Blue White over Velvet Green, so check your paint plate.
- L90D Pastel White (Bay Bus roof): over L20B Bright Orange, which VW called Brilliant Orange.
How it ships: Ground only, to the lower 48 states and DC. Aerosols cannot go to AK, HI, US territories or outside the US. Local pickup at the shop in Orange, CA. Every can is mixed to order for your color code. Allow 2–3 business days before it ships.
Original VW whites, ready to spray
Each can is mixed to one factory Volkswagen color, listed by the L-code and name stamped on your car's M-plate or paint tag. It is made for air-cooled work: a door jamb, a replacement panel, small parts, or a repair blended into original paint.
It is a 1K single-stage enamel: color and gloss in one coat, no clear coat. It is UV protected against fading, and once cured it wet sands and buffs to match the gloss of the paint around it.
Key features
- Factory VW colors listed by L-code and name
- 1K single-stage high-gloss automotive enamel, no clear coat needed
- UV-protected finish that holds up outdoors
- Wet sands and buffs after curing to blend with existing paint
- Standard aerosol can for touch-ups, small parts, jambs and panel repairs
Fits
Any Volkswagen first painted in one of the colors below: Beetle and Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3, Split and Bay Window Bus, Thing and Vanagon, plus one Eurovan white (LR902). Paint fits by code, not by model, so match the L-code on your car's paint plate.
Whites & Ivories in this listing
Match the code, not the name. VW used some names twice: L62 Ivory is the Split Bus ivory, and L567 Ivory is a 1965–1983 Bus and Vanagon color. Years are model years. Where no dated factory source confirms a code, the table says so. Call the shop and we will check it with you.

How to use it
- Clean and degrease the surface. Sand, and prime bare metal or repairs with a compatible automotive primer.
- Shake the can well. Spray a test card and check it against your car in daylight.
- Lay down several light, even coats rather than one heavy one, with flash time between coats as the can label says.
- Let it cure fully, then wet sand and buff to blend the gloss into the finish around it.
Always follow the directions and safety information printed on the can.

FAQ
How do I find my VW's paint code?
Most air-cooled VWs carry the factory L-code on the M-plate or paint plate (under the front hood, behind the spare tire, or on the body tag), and later models on the data sticker in the trunk or service booklet. Pick the matching L-code from the Color menu.
What kind of paint is Temple Restoration Paints spray paint?
A 16 oz 1K single-stage, high-gloss automotive enamel in an aerosol can. It is UV protected, and no separate clear coat is needed.
Will it match my existing paint?
Each can is mixed to the factory VW color for that code. Old paint fades, so spray a test card and check it in daylight before you paint the panel. Once cured, the new paint can be wet sanded and buffed to blend in.
Which white goes on top of a two-tone Bus?
Split Bus: L289 Blue White over L380 Turquoise or L360 Sea Blue, L680 Cumulus White over L360 Sea Blue, and L87 Pearl White over L325 Mouse Grey or L512 Velvet Green. Bay Bus: L90D Pastel White roof over L20B Bright Orange. Each color is its own can.
Why are there New and Patina versions of some colors?
Only L31 Dove Blue and L53 Sealing Wax Red come in New and Patina versions. New is the fresh factory shade; Patina is matched to original paint after decades of sun. Every other code is one factory shade.
How long does it take to ship?
Every can is mixed to order for your color code. Allow 2–3 business days before it ships.
Is the price per can?
Yes, $70.00 for one aerosol can. Order as many cans as the job needs.
Can spray paint ship by air or overseas?
No. Aerosols are regulated as hazardous for shipping, so these cans ship by ground only and cannot ship to AK, HI, PR, GU, AS, MP, UM or VI, or outside the US.
