EMPI 911-Style Fuchs-Look Wheel Set of 4 — 15-inch, VW Wide-Five 5x205
Short answer: A set of four EMPI 911-style cast alloy wheels drilled for the VW wide-five 5x205 pattern, so they bolt straight onto a 1949–1967 Beetle, 1956–1966 Karmann Ghia, 1961–1965 Type 3, 1950–1967 Split Bus or 1968–1970 Bay Window Bus with no adapters. Choose chrome or polished with black, square 15x4.5, square 15x5.5, or staggered 15x4.5 front / 15x5.5 rear. EMPI rates them ET20 with a ball lug seat; caps and valve stems are included. Beetle, Ghia and Type 3 use M12x1.5 ball-seat bolts; the Bus uses M14x1.5 bolts and EMPI publishes no load rating.

- Offset: ET20 per EMPI's description on the 15x4.5 wheels; the 15x5.5 wheels have 4 in backspacing.
- Lug thread: M12x1.5 on the Beetle, Ghia and Type 3. The Split Bus and 1968–1970 Bay Bus use M14x1.5 ball-seat bolts.
- Center bore: not published by EMPI; we are confirming it.
- Typical tire sizes (common choices, not an EMPI spec): 165R15 or 165/80R15 on 15x4.5; 165R15, 185/65R15 or 195/65R15 on 15x5.5. On a Bus, use a load-range C or D (reinforced) tire.
Bus load rating — read this before you order for a Bus
EMPI lists these wheels for the Split Bus and the 1968–1970 Bay Bus, but EMPI does not publish a load rating for them. If EMPI publishes one we will add it here; until then we do not call them "load rated". The Bus also uses M14x1.5 ball-seat lug bolts, not the M12x1.5 bolts a Beetle uses, so ask us to confirm hardware before you order for a Bus. A loaded Bus can put well over 1,200 lb on each corner, so for Bus use we recommend the square 15x5.5 set (not a 4.5-inch front), reinforced load-range C or D tires with a load index of 100 or higher, staying within the van's rated weight, and checking lug torque after the first drive.
What's included / not included
- Included: four EMPI wheels in the sizes of the set you choose, each with an EMPI logo center cap (chrome or silver depending on finish) and a chrome valve stem.
- Not included: lug bolts, tires, mounting and balancing, the tall rear center caps a Split or early Bay Bus needs, wheel locks.
Mounting hardware you'll need
- Beetle, Ghia, Type 3: 20 M12x1.5 ball-seat (radius) lug bolts, five per wheel, for example EMPI 00-9564-0 chrome ball-seat M12 lug bolts. EMPI's description of these wheels specifies a ball seat, so do not use 60° conical bolts on them.
- Split Bus and 1968–1970 Bay Bus: 20 M14x1.5 ball-seat lug bolts. The M12 bolts above do not fit a Bus hub. Ask us for the correct Bus bolt and length before ordering.
- Check thread engagement: an alloy wheel's mounting pad is thicker than a stock steel wheel, so bolts that were just long enough on steel wheels may be too short.
- Bus owners: the rear axle nut on a 1950–1970 Bus needs the extended cap, EMPI 10-1107-0 (sold as a pair).
Why it matters
Most "Fuchs" sets are 5x130 and need adapters on an early VW. These are cast in the wide-five pattern, so they bolt to the original drums with no adapter, keeping the track width stock and the wheel bearings loaded the way VW designed. The staggered set gives a slightly wider rear tire; the square 15x5.5 set is the right choice for a Bus.
Install notes
- Test-fit one bare wheel per corner and check drum, suspension and fender clearance at full lock.
- Torque lug bolts to your vehicle's factory specification and re-check after the first 50 miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these Fuchs-style wheels bolt onto a 1966 Beetle without adapters?
Yes. They are drilled 5x205 (wide-five), the pattern on 1949–1967 Beetles, 1956–1966 Ghias and 1961–1965 Type 3s, so they bolt to the original drums with M12x1.5 ball-seat bolts. The 1950–1970 Bus is also 5x205 but uses M14x1.5 ball-seat bolts. The 1967 and later Ghia is 4x130.
Will these fit my 1972 Bay Window Bus?
No. Buses from August 1970 (1971 model year, chassis 211 2000 001) use the 5x112 pattern. Use our EMPI 911-style 5x112 set instead.
Are these wheels load rated for a VW Bus?
EMPI does not publish a load rating for these wheels, so we do not claim one. For a Split or 1968–1970 Bay Bus choose the square 15x5.5 set, use M14x1.5 ball-seat Bus lug bolts, and use load-range C or D tires with a load index of 100 or more.
What lug bolts do I need for 5x205 Fuchs-style wheels?
On a Beetle, Ghia or Type 3: twenty M12x1.5 ball-seat (radius) lug bolts, five per wheel. On a Split or 1968–1970 Bay Bus: twenty M14x1.5 ball-seat Bus lug bolts. EMPI specifies a ball seat for these wheels; lug bolts are not included.
What offset are the 5x205 EMPI 911-style wheels?
EMPI lists the 15x4.5 at ET20 with 3-1/2 in backspacing, and the 15x5.5 with 4 in backspacing.
Does the Thing take wide-five wheels?
Yes. EMPI lists the VW 181 Thing for these 5x205 wheels, which includes the 1973–1974 US models.
