Not for convertibles. EMPI catalogs this as a sedan harness; cabriolet bodies route the rear section differently.

Why 1960 is a single-year part: VW revised the Beetle's wiring almost yearly through this period, and the 1960 car sits between two different looms. EMPI does not group it with either neighbor. If your car is a 1958 or 1959, use 98-9476-0; if it is a 1961, use 98-9480-0; 1962 through 1964 share 98-9482-0. Check the chassis number rather than the title year if the car is close to a model-year changeover, since VW started each model year in August of the prior calendar year.

Before You Start

• Photograph everything first — behind the dash, inside both headlight buckets, at the tail lights, and every place a wire touches the body
• Remove the old loom as one piece and lay it next to the new harness to verify branch routing before you feed anything through a grommet
• Disconnect the battery ground and leave it disconnected until the very last connection
• Take every ground point back to bare metal. A new harness will not compensate for a rusty ground bracket, and on 6 volts it shows up immediately
• Keep the installation manual and a period wiring diagram side by side on the bench
• Set aside a weekend. It is patient work, not difficult work, and rushing it defeats the purpose of doing it at all

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this cover 1959 or 1961 as well?
No. It is a 1960-only harness. Use EMPI 98-9476-0 for 1958–1959 and 98-9480-0 for 1961.

What if my car is right on the model-year line?
Go by the chassis number, not the registration year. VW began each model year in August of the previous calendar year, so a car titled 1960 may be built to 1959 or 1961 specification.

Is it for 6-volt or 12-volt?
Either. 1960 Beetles were 6-volt from the factory, and the same harness serves the car after a 12-volt conversion. Voltage does not change the routing, and the gauges are sized for the heavier current of a 6-volt system.

Does a fuse box come with it?
No. Fuse box, switches and battery cables are separate parts.

How are the wires identified?
