A 1961 Beetle is now past sixty years old, and its wiring shows it. Insulation that was flexible when the car left Wolfsburg has gone brittle and flakes off at the bend behind the dash. Copper that used to be bright is green and powdery where moisture wicked up under the jacket. And somewhere in the car there is a repair — a wire nut, a length of lamp cord, a headlight feed run outside the loom entirely. This is EMPI's complete reproduction wiring harness for the 1961 Beetle sedan, an all-new loom built to the German factory pattern with correct gauges, correct color coding and period-style connectors. What Makes a Reproduction Harness Worth It

1961 is a one-year harness. VW did not carry the same loom forward, which is exactly why a year-correct reproduction matters more here than on a longer-running car — a generic kit will not have the branch lengths or the routing your body was built around. Universal harnesses leave you inventing circuits, measuring your own runs and crimping splices mid-loom, and every one of those splices is a future problem: a voltage drop, a hot joint, a fault the next owner has to chase. • Left-hand drive only. RHD cars use a different loom and this harness will not reach correctly.
• Works on the car's original 6-volt system or after a 12-volt conversion — routing is identical either way, and the gauges are sized for 6-volt current draw

Single-year fitment. Do not order this for a 1960 or a 1962 car. VW revised Beetle wiring for 1962, and EMPI covers 1962–1964 with part 98-9482-0. Not a convertible harness — EMPI lists 98-9480-0 as a sedan part; a 1961 cabriolet routes its rear section differently.

Before You Start

• Disconnect the battery ground first and leave it off until the last terminal is on
• Photograph the old loom before you touch it — behind the dash, at the light housings and at every grommet
• Remove the old harness as one piece and lay it alongside the new one to confirm branch routing
• Clean every ground point back to bright metal; new wire will not fix a rusty ground bracket
• Have a 1961-specific wiring diagram open. Early-sixties Beetle circuits are simple but they are not the same as a late Bug's
• Set aside a weekend. The work is patient rather than difficult, with the seats and dash trim out

Will this fit a 1960 or a 1962 Beetle?
No. 1961 is a single-year harness. VW revised Beetle wiring for 1962 — use EMPI 98-9482-0 for 1962 through 1964. A 1960 car needs its own year-specific loom.

Is a 1961 Beetle 6-volt or 12-volt?
6-volt from the factory. US-market Beetles did not go to 12 volts until 1967. This harness serves the car either way: voltage does not change the routing, and the wire gauges are sized for the higher current a 6-volt system draws.

Does it come with a fuse box?
