EMPI Complete Wiring Harness — VW Beetle Sedan & Convertible 1965 (98-9484-0)

Most electrical gremlins in a 1965 Beetle are not really electrical problems — they are age problems. Sixty years of engine-bay heat and winter damp leave the insulation hard, the copper oxidized under the jacket, and half a dozen previous owners' repairs buried inside the loom where you cannot see them. Chasing faults one at a time in wiring like that is unpaid work with no end. This is EMPI's complete reproduction wiring harness for the 1965 Beetle, sedan and convertible: a brand-new loom built to the German factory pattern, with correct gauges, correct color coding and period-style connectors, so you can strip the old wiring out and start the car's electrical system over from zero. EMPI part #98-9484-0.

What Makes a Reproduction Harness Worth It

Wiring a Beetle with a universal kit means designing the car's electrical system yourself — deciding circuit layout, measuring every run, and joining wire in the middle of the loom where nobody can inspect it later. Those mid-run splices are where resistance builds, where dim headlights and intermittent brake lights come from, and where the next person working on the car gets stuck. A year-correct harness removes all of that. The branches arrive already cut to length for a 1965 body, they route the way the factory routed them through the same grommets and along the same tunnel, and the colors and tracers read straight off a period wiring diagram in a Bentley or Haynes manual. Every connection you make is a push-on terminal at the component. The finished job is one you can hand to a mechanic — or to a buyer — without apology.

What's Included

  • Main harness with front section and dash wiring for the 1965 body
  • Individually packaged, numbered branch wires so every leg is identified before you begin
  • Factory-style connectors, terminal ends and grommets
  • Correct wire gauge with German-spec color coding and tracer stripes
  • Printed installation instructions (EMPI K5-1965 manual)

Not included: fuse box, switches, bulb holders and battery cables are sold separately. If you are rewiring the whole car anyway, replace the fuse box and the battery-to-body ground strap at the same time — they are the two most common sources of voltage drop on a car that has just been given new wiring.

Vehicle Fitment

  • VW Beetle sedan — 1965, steel roof or sliding sunroof
  • VW Beetle convertible (cabriolet) — 1965. Unlike the 1962–1964 harness, EMPI lists this one for both bodies.
  • Left-hand drive only. RHD cars use a different loom.
  • Works on the car's original 6-volt system or after a 12-volt conversion — routing is identical either way, and the gauges are sized for 6-volt current draw

Single-year fitment. VW changed Beetle wiring for 1965 and changed it again for 1966, so this loom covers 1965 only. Use EMPI 98-9482-0 for 1962–1964, 98-9485-0 for 1966 and 98-9486-0 for 1967.

Before You Start

  • Disconnect the battery ground before anything else and leave it off until the final terminal is seated
  • Photograph the original loom in place — behind the dash, at the headlight buckets, at the tail lights and at every body grommet
  • Pull the old harness out as one assembly and lay it beside the new one to verify branch routing before you thread anything
  • On a convertible, note how the rear section runs before removal; the top mechanism and rear quarters leave less room to work than a sedan
  • Clean every ground point to bright metal. New wire cannot compensate for a corroded ground
  • Keep a 1965-specific wiring diagram at hand and plan on a full weekend with the seats and dash trim removed

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this fit both the sedan and the convertible?
Yes. EMPI lists 98-9484-0 as the 1965 sedan and convertible harness, so one part number covers both bodies.

Will it fit a 1964 or a 1966 Beetle?
No. This is a 1965-only loom. Use EMPI 98-9482-0 for 1962–1964, 98-9485-0 for 1966 and 98-9486-0 for 1967.

Is a 1965 Beetle 6-volt or 12-volt?
6-volt from the factory. US-market Beetles did not switch to 12 volts until 1967. The harness works on either system — voltage does not change the routing, and the gauges are sized for the higher current a 6-volt system draws.

What VW part number does this replace?
113-971-011-E, also written 113971011E and catalogued as WK-113-1965.

Does it include a fuse box or switches?
No. The fuse box, switches, bulb holders and battery cables are separate parts.

Are the wires labeled?
Yes. Branch wires are individually packaged and numbered, and the colors and tracer stripes follow the German factory scheme so they match a period wiring diagram.

Will it work on a right-hand-drive car?
No. This is a left-hand-drive harness only.
