It sits in a single model year of its own, and the wiring is a big part of why: VW moved the US cars to a 12-volt system for 1967 and reworked the electrics to match, then changed direction again for 1968. Before You Start

• Disconnect the battery ground before anything else and leave it disconnected until the final connection is made
• Photograph the car as found — behind the dash, at both light housings, at the tunnel grommets — before a single connector comes apart
• Remove the old loom in one piece if possible and lay it alongside the new one to verify branch routing
• Take every ground point back to bright metal. On a 12-volt car a marginal ground shows up as flicker and slow cranking, and it will look exactly like a harness fault
• Plan for a weekend with the seats and dash trim out. It is patient work, not difficult work, and going slowly is what keeps it a one-time job
