By the time a 1970 or 1971 Beetle reaches its second half-century, the loom under the dash has usually stopped being wiring and started being a liability. Insulation goes brittle and falls off in flakes when you move a branch, copper turns green inside the jacket where moisture wicked in at a terminal, and there is almost always a previous owner's contribution in there somewhere — a scotch-lock on the brake light circuit, a stereo tapped into the ignition feed, a headlight wire lengthened with lamp cord. This is EMPI's complete reproduction wiring harness for the 1970–1971 standard Beetle, built to the factory German pattern in correct gauges and correct colors, so the whole mess comes out and a proper loom goes in. The alternative to a year-correct loom is a universal kit, which means you decide where every circuit goes, cut every length yourself, and then own that decision forever — including the day someone else has to diagnose it. This harness arrives with the branches already the right length and already routed the way Wolfsburg routed them. The colors and tracer stripes match the diagram in the back of your Bentley or Haynes manual, so tracing a dead tail light is a matter of reading the book rather than reverse-engineering your own work. Those two items cause more "the new harness didn't fix it" phone calls than anything else — a corroded fuse box and a rusty ground bracket will drop voltage no matter how good the loom feeding them is.

Vehicle Fitment

• VW Beetle sedan and convertible — 1970 and 1971 (standard Beetle, including sunroof sedans)
• Left-hand drive only. RHD cars use a different loom.
• 12-volt. These cars left the factory 12-volt, and the harness is built to that pattern — no conversion work or rewiring required.

Not for the 1971 Super Beetle (1302). 1971 is the year the Super arrived alongside the standard car, and it is wired differently. EMPI builds a separate harness for it — part 98-9489-0, VW reference 133-971-011. Order that one if your car has the MacPherson-strut front end and the curved windshield deck; this part is for the standard Beetle only.

Note on 1971 convertibles. EMPI catalogs this part as sedan and convertible for both years. The corresponding VW loom, 113-971-011-J, is listed by some suppliers as sedan 1970–1971 but convertible 1970 only. If you have a 1971 cabriolet, lay the new harness next to the old one and confirm the rear section routing before you commit to it.

Technical Specifications

Before You Start

• Disconnect the battery ground first and leave it off until the very last connection is made
• Photograph everything before you pull anything — behind the dash, at both headlight buckets, at the tail light housings and at the engine bay junctions
• Remove the old loom in one piece if you can, then lay it alongside the new harness on the floor to confirm branch routing and length before threading anything
• Clean every ground point back to bright metal and use a star washer. New wiring will not compensate for a ground that is painted or rusty
• Feed the tunnel section with a pull string tied to the old harness before you remove it
• Plan on a full weekend with the seats, carpet and dash trim out. The work is not hard, it is just slow and methodical

Will this fit a 1971 Super Beetle?
No. EMPI builds a separate harness for the 1971 Super Beetle, part 98-9489-0, VW reference 133-971-011. The Super's different front structure and body wiring mean this loom will not route correctly in it. This part covers the standard Beetle only.

Is this a 6-volt or 12-volt harness?
12-volt. Every 1970 and 1971 Beetle left the factory 12-volt, so there is no conversion question on these years — the harness matches what the car was built with.

Does it fit a convertible?
EMPI lists this harness for sedan and convertible, 1970 and 1971. The equivalent VW part, 113-971-011-J, is catalogued by some suppliers as covering the convertible in 1970 only, so on a 1971 cabriolet compare the rear section against your original loom before installing.

Does it come with a fuse box?
No. The fuse box, switches, bulb holders and battery cables are separate parts. Most people replace the fuse box at the same time.
