Part numbers: EMPI 10-2003-0 · 1020030 · UPC 707924570014
This is the easy way to put a classic look on the car: the five-spoke wide-five Sprintstar in gloss black with polished spokes and lip, already wearing Yokohama's GT Special Classic — the period-style Y350 tread and sidewall — so the set comes off the truck ready to bolt on once you have the right lug hardware.

Why It Matters
The lug seat is the detail to get right. These alloys take a 60° conical (tapered) seat, while stock VW steel wheels use ball-seat bolts. Ball-seat bolts on a cone-seat wheel only touch on a thin ring and can work loose, so plan on new 60° hardware with this set. Size-wise, 165/80R15 on a 15x5 rim is the size EMPI chose for this package; it stands about 25.4 in tall.
Bus owners: the 1950–1970 Bus is also 5x205, but it uses M14x1.5 lug bolts, EMPI does not list this package for the Bus, and these are passenger-car tires. A Bus needs load-rated wheels and Load Range C tires, so we do not list this set for one — ask us for Bus options.
Install Notes
- Check the bolt pattern on your hub before ordering — 5x205 only.
- Use 20 M12x1.5 lug bolts with a 60° conical (tapered) seat (5 per wheel).
- Torque to the value in your factory manual or the hardware maker's spec, in a star pattern, and re-check after the first 50 miles.
- Test-fit one wheel for brake and fender clearance before mounting all four.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will this wheel and tire set fit my VW Beetle? Yes, if it is a 1950–1967 Beetle, a 1956–1966 Karmann Ghia or a 1961–1965 Type 3 with 5x205 wide-five hubs. It does not fit 1968-and-later Beetles or 1967-and-later Ghias (4x130) or the 1971–1979 Bay Bus (5x112), and it is not listed for the 1950–1970 Bus, which uses M14x1.5 bolts and needs load-rated wheels — ask us.
- Will this set fit my 1968 Beetle? No. VW switched the Beetle to the 4x130 four-lug pattern for 1968 (the Karmann Ghia changed a year earlier, for 1967). This set is 5x205 wide-five and only fits 1967-and-earlier Beetles, 1966-and-earlier Ghias and 1961–1965 Type 3s.
- Are the tires mounted and balanced? Yes. EMPI delivers every wheel and tire combo mounted and balanced, with new valve stems and matching center caps installed.
- Do these come with lug bolts? Not by default — EMPI ships combos without mounting hardware, but you can add the matching kit in the Lug Hardware option above. You need 20 M12x1.5 lug bolts with a 60° conical (tapered) seat (5 per wheel). The matching EMPI part is 00-9711-0 (chrome 60° M12x1.5, set of 5 — order 4 sets), which we stock on our EMPI chrome lug bolt listing. Do not reuse stock ball-seat VW bolts on these alloys.
- What size are the tires? Yokohama GT Special Classic 165/80R15, about 25.4 in tall. The GT Special uses the classic Y350 tread and sidewall design.
- What is the offset of these wheels? EMPI does not restate offset on the combo itself. The matching EMPI single wheel is listed as 00-9689-0: offset +20mm, backspacing 3-3/4 in. We are confirming with EMPI that the combo uses that same wheel.
