King Performance Heavy-Duty Stainless Clutch Cable — VW Type 3 Notchback, Squareback & Fastback

The Type 3 clutch cable lives a hard life: it runs the full length of the tunnel tube, it is hard to get at when it frays, and replacement cables for the Notchback, Squareback and Fastback are harder to find than Beetle cables. This heavy-duty stainless steel clutch cable from King Performance is built specifically for the Type 3 chassis, using 1/8" 1x19 stainless steel wire — thicker than stock, and stainless instead of galvanized — with a 7mm Ledloy rod with clear zinc plating at the transaxle end. Made in the USA.

It is the Type 3 member of the same King cable family as our Beetle, Manx and Bus cables, so if you have already run one of those on another car you know what you are getting.

Installation Tips

• Lightly grease the new cable before feeding it through the tunnel tube from the pedal end.
• Check the Bowden tube while you are in there. The curved steel sleeve near the transaxle sets the cable's sag; a cracked or collapsed tube causes chatter and early cable wear. Type 3 1964–1973 uses the 311 721 361 tube — CH75 or EMPI 98-7208-B.
• Thread on the wing nut, set 10–20mm (3/8"–3/4") of pedal free play, and re-check after the cable has seated in. King's billet KING NUT clutch adjustment wing nut makes adjustment tool-free.
• Broken clutch pedal hook? Fix it now with the TK Pro-Formance billet pedal shaft, which fits Type 3 pedal clusters.
