The Beetle years that actually change the parts
Volkswagen revised the Beetle every model year and rarely made a fuss about it. These are the changes that decide whether a part fits your car:
- 1967 - the big one. 12 volt electrics replace 6 volt, the engine goes to 1500cc and 43 horsepower, and upright sealed-beam headlights replace the sloped ones. A 1967 is not a 1966 and it is not a 1968.
- 1967 into 1968 - the body changes. Our rear fenders for 1946-1967 are the wide pre-1968 profile and do not carry over.
- 1969 - independent rear suspension replaces the swing axle.
- 1971 - the dual-port 1600cc arrives, and so does the Super Beetle.
- 1975 - fuel injection replaces the carburetor.
A Super Beetle is a different car from the firewall forward
The 1971 Super Beetle (Type 1302) uses a MacPherson-strut front end and gains a bigger front trunk; the standard Beetle kept its torsion beam. From 1973 the Type 1303 adds the curved panoramic windshield and a padded dash. Front suspension, front sheet metal and everything that bolts to them are not a straight swap between the two, so establish which one you have - then see Super Beetle parts.
Get the year right in thirty seconds
On 1965-1979 cars the third digit of the chassis number is the model-year code. Run it through the VW chassis decoder, then check how the car left the factory with the Beetle M-code decoder and the Type 1 paint code list.
We make what was never reproduced
Tunnel access plates, weld-in seat belt anchor plates, contoured tunnel patch panels, forward flush tunnel covers - laser cut and formed in our own shop in Orange, California, because restoring these cars is what we do all day. Chassis and pan work runs flat rates from $2,350 to $4,050, finished in 30 days or less once started and built in the order received: chassis work.
